House blaze 'most likely' accidental, probe finds

Investigators say a blaze that left a 72-year-old man in a critical condition was started after a hob was accidentally turned on, causing an air fryer stored on top to catch fire.

Emergency services were called to the house on Saffron Drive, Oakwood in Derby, at 23:24 BST on 23 April.

A joint police and fire investigation concluded the "most likely" cause of the blaze was accidental.

The man, who was rescued from the house by firefighters, is now out of critical care and hopes to be back home soon, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) said on Wednesday.

Crews from Nottingham Road, Ascot Drive and Kingsway attended and had extinguished the blaze by 00:20.
